Q&A: Groundwork

Writer: Martina RienznerMartina Rienzner

Thank you for your questions about my last post, regarding the purpose of this particular groundwork exercise. So why would we teach Sultan to respond to rope pressure around the foot?

Answer: It is one of many ways to

  1. move Sultan's feet around and practice responsiveness to a variety of aids

  2. de-sensitise Sultan and prepare him to respond calmly, should he ever get snagged in a lead rope, fencing wire etc.

  3. practice yielding to ever decreasing pressure (this exercise starts with a strong rope, and aims to decrease the rope size and pressure along the way)
